The Centre for Arab Genomic Studies Participates in Organizing a Training Course for Myology 04 July 2021
The Center for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS) is partnering with the Institute of Myology in Paris in running the Summer School of Myology. This is a condensed, intensive week-long course that offers clinicians and researchers the possibility to get trained in myology. Most aspects of myology are addressed during the course, from basic science to cutting-edge therapies, as well as clinical and genetic approaches to muscle diseases. Since 1998, more than 800 students have attended the course and been taught by internationally recognized faculties.

This year, for the first time, the course will be run entirely virtually,  with a significant portion of pre-available video courses (recorded lessons from 38 international speakers) and further lessons and interactive workshops broadcast live. With the virtual format, the course will be able to accommodate more students than before.

This year’s course is headed by Dr Andoni Urtizberea and Dr Norma Romero, and the scientific committee includes 12 myology experts. Talking about the course, Dr Andoni Urtizberea said “Myology is a universal discipline and neuromuscular disorders are spread all over the world. Partnering with CAGS makes a lot of sense to us. CAGS and Institut de Myologie already teamed up to run MENA-MYO, a very successful regional educational event that we hope to see more editions of.”
Dr. Mahmoud Taleb Al-Ali, the Director of CAGS said, “neuromuscular diseases represent a significant number of patients, especially in the Middle-East where marriages between relatives are fairly common. As a whole, these devastating diseases (mainly muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy) represent an important burden to patients, families, caregivers and health authorities of the region. The partnership of CAGS with the Institute of Myology has been very efficient and fruitful in training health care professionals in this much needed sector.”
