Lecture on Genomics Presented by winner of Hamdan Award for ‎Distinguished Personalities in the Arab world ‎ 28 November 2022
Prof. Fowzan Alkuraya, Professor of Human ‎Genetics at Faisal University and a Senior Consultant and Principal Clinical ‎Scientist at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSHRC), ‎Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, expressed his deep thanks and gratitude towards the ‎Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, and the ‎scientific committee of the Award, for presenting him with the Hamdan Award ‎to honor distinguished medical personalities in the Arab world for the 12th term ‎‎(2021-2022).‎
Prof. Alkuraya mentioned that the Hamdan Medical Award was a pioneer in ‎the Arab world in embracing and encouraging researchers in the medical field, ‎as it aimed to highlight distinguished talents in the health sector and is ‎considered a source of inspiration for the rising generations.‎
This was during a meeting between Prof. Alkuraya and H.E. Abdullah bin ‎Souqat, Executive Director of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum ‎Award for Medical Sciences, at the Mohammed bin Rashid University of ‎Medicine and Health Sciences. Prof. Alkuraya gave a talk on genomics in the ‎Middle East based on his rich experience of working on the human genome, ‎and especially the autozygome, which is prevalent in the Arab populations. ‎His talk touched on the utilization of autozygosity in genomic medicine to both ‎understand novel gene-disease relationships and to address genetic diseases in ‎patients and their families.‎
For his part, H.E. Abdullah bin Souqat praised Prof. Alkuraya’s achievements ‎in the field of genomics and  human genetics, and his focus with his research ‎team in translating the latest developments in genomics and his contributions ‎that work to improve the health sector not only in the Arab world, but in the ‎whole world.‎
It is worth mentioning that Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al ‎Maktoum honored Prof. Fowzan Alkuraya and 13 other winners of the ‎Awards of the 12th term of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award ‎for Medical Sciences in a grand ceremony, at the Museum of the Future in ‎Dubai, in the presence of a group of sheikhs, dignitaries, ministers and officials ‎in the health and medical sectors. ‎
