Professional Details/Academic Background
Dr. Husnia Gargash was born in Dubai 1957. She completed her high school education in Dubai, and went on to obtain her Undergraduate medical education from Baghdad Medical College. She received her Post Graduate Diploma in Obstetrics from Dublin, and later, her MRCOG and FRCOG Degrees from London. During her time in London, she worked at Guy’s, Newham, Whittington, and Hillingdon Hospitals. She returned to Dubai in 1991 and joined Al Wasl as Registrar, Obstetrics & Gynecology. She became the first Emirati gynecologist in the UAE.
She also joined Dubai Medical College as a lecturer in the same year. She was promoted to seior registrar and joined Dubai Hospital. She had her subspecialty training in Reproductive Medicine and Assisted Reproduction by Prof. Ian Craft who is one of the pioneers in the field of Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Gargash lives in Dubai, UAE with her husband, who is a surgeon at Baraha Hospital. The couple is blessed with three daughters and a son. In her free time, Dr. Gargash loves to walk, read history, and autobiographies of scientists and other pionners in her field of interest and travel .
Professional Milestones
Dr. Gargash has worked as a Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dubai Hospital. She has also worked as Associate Professor and Unit Head in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dubai Medical College. In 2003,she was given the responsibility to serve as Director of the Dubai Gynecology and Fertility Center, a highly specialized facility of the Dubai Health Authority that provides up to date and comprehensive management of infertility.
She introduced egg and embryo vitrification technique and FISH tecnique in the center making the center the first reproductive center in the GCC countries. She retained this directorship for a lengthy period of time. In 2008, she resigned from her directorship of Dubai Fertility Center and started working and serving the community on her own.
In 2010, she opened a new institution, named Dr. Husnia Gargash Fertility Gynecology and Obstetrics Center.This center provides all types of assisted reproductive treatment ,and now successfully launched advanced preimplantation technology aiming at preventing the delivery of Thalasaemic childern through genetic diagnosis of embryos and transfer of only the normal embyos .
Thalasaemia is one of the commonest hereditery disease in the local UAE population and their treatment costly to the goverment and distressing to the families and the affected individuals. The center also provides services for prevention of other common monogenetic diseases as well as rare monogenetic diseases and reciprocal and robertsonian translocation.
Dr. Gargash is a Member of several Medical Communities, including the British General Medical, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Endocrinology, and Emirates Medical ssociation, and served as a member of the UAE RCOG Reference Committee. She was the Chairperson of the Ethics Committee of Dubai Gynecology & Fertility Centre as well as of the Post-Graduate scientific meetings in Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at Dubai Hospital.
Major Achievements
Dr. Gargash is one of the pioneers in the field of Assisted Reproduction and Women’s Health Care in the Middle East, and is highly reputed for her skills and vast experience in this particular field among the medical fraternity all around the world.
