H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum

It is our commitment and duty to pursue excellence in science. Owing to the tremendous explosion in the number of high quality scientific research, progress has been achieved in various fields of medicine resulting in a number of new inventions exemplified by the discovery of new medicines, identifying mechanisms of action of microorganisms and introducing new surgical technologies both invasive and noninvasive, enabling greater understanding of pathogenic microorganisms thus helping to combat disease and to significantly decrease the risks of major surgery.

Based on the progress achieved in the technology, research and studies of human genome, this foundation has taken a significant new step forward with the initiation of "Arab Genetic Research Project" and the target on this project has achieved its first step successfully. We aim to tap the brightest minds that have succeeded in making a breakthrough in research into health problems and realizing its immense potential to benefit humankind.

We are proud to announce the unprecedented success of the 6th term of awards. Our pursuit of excellence is a never-ending process. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the patron of this award has continued to provide support and encouragement to the development and progress of science and medicine and has directed the foundation to move forward to a new scientific world and increased the status of the award.

The practice of neonatal medicine has changed tremendously since its recognition as a separate entity in 1975. Complex new technologies like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and simple ones like the administration of surfactant resulted in increased survival of very small babies who would have succumbed to their illnesses a few years ago. Benefits of antenatal care have been recognized by most mothers, and have resulted in the decrease in incidence of neural tube defects and the fetal alcohol syndrome. One of the most remarkable discoveries was that of Rh incompatibility in the newborn. Philip Levine and Alexander Weiner published seminal papers in which they analyzed in detail the problem of Rh incompatibility. In 1938 Ruth Darrow who had her own problems with Rh disease made a brilliant analysis of the literature. She reasoned based on literature that the mother was a constant factor and deduced that the disease was an acquired one with the mother producing a substance that did not affect her but transmitted through the placenta to affect the fetus. In 1940 about a year after Levine’s important paper on the fetus’ ability to immunize the mother, Weiner described an experiment in which he injected red cells from the rhesus monkey into a rabbit which produced an antibody which reacted with 80% of human blood. Following this many other developments occurred, including study of blood group inheritance, Coomb’s test, exchange transfusion and intrauterine transfusion. Other very significant discoveries occurred that paved the way for the modern improved care of the premature infant. Therefore, we chose the "Neonatal Medicine" for the coming term 2011-2012 as main subject for the award.

Through the ages, observation and research have been the prime building blocks on which biological advancement and discoveries and invention have been made. Scientific study of diseases over several hundreds of years has resulted in the wide range of sophisticated techniques used today for diagnosis, treatment and research. Research is essential if progress is to continue to occur. This term the award comprises three categories: International, Arab World and United Arab Emirates Awards. In the 7th of the series of biennial awards, the Award Presentation Ceremony will be held on 10th December,2012, followed by the 3-day conference from 11th to 13th Deember,2012, which would feature new subjects and a new theme.
