1. Grand Hamdan International Award - Winner: Dr.Denton A Cooley

Nationality: American
Age: 80 years
President & Surgeon - in - chief
Texas Heart Institute, Texas, USA.

Dr. Denton A Cooley is a world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon who has pioneered and developed many of the techniques used in cardiovascular surgery today. He has been involved in cardiovascular surgery for over 50 years. One of his major contributions is the development of techniques for repair and replacement of diseased heart valves and the development of operations to correct congenital heart anomalies in infants and children. He has received a series of honours and awards. He has developed over 200 surgical instruments and is a pioneer in the area of artificial heart technology.

Special Recognition Award Dr.Shahbudin H Rahimtoola. - Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery

Nationality: USA
Age: 69 years
Place of birth: Bombay, India.
Distinguished Professor at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA

Dr. Shahbudin H Rahimtoola is a distinguished professor of the University of Southern California. He has been involved in cardiovascular medicine and surgery for over 35 years. His original observations and perseverance led to the final acceptance of the concept of hibernating myocardium by the medical community of the world. He has won a good number of awards relating to his work. He has documented 2 different clinical syndromes, (1) Hibernating heart, and (2) the heart valve diseases. These two contributions have revolutionized diagonostic and management aspects of many patients' clinical problems. He has over 500 publications, has written over 800 book chapters and has made nearly 1200 presentations of his work, locally and internationally.

2. Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence
Genetics in Diabetes
- Winner: Dr.C.Ronald Kahn

Nationality: USA
Age: 55 years
Director of Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, USA.

Nominated work: The molecular cloning of the insulin receptor

Dr. C Ronald Kahn is well known, prominent and has been in a leading position in the realm of insulin action and diabetes-related research throughout his distinguished career. His unique observations have revolutionized the field and shed new light on the pathogenesis of diabetes. He identified auto antibodies that were specific to the insulin receptor in diabetes patients with insulin resistance. This eventually led to the molecular cloning of the insulin receptor. Dr.C R Kahn is Director of Joslin Diabetes Center and Professor of Medicine in Harvard Medical School. He is also the author of more than 340 original papers having145 chapters and review articles. He has edited 6 books and the most recent one is Joslin's Textbook of Diabetes. He has won more than 15 awards.

2. Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence
Recombinant vaccines in infectious diseases
- Winner: Dr. Andrew James McMichael

Nationality: British
Age: 57 years
Director - MRC's Human Immunology Unit, University of Oxford, UK.

Nominated work: MHC Class I restricted Cytolytic T cells.

Dr.Andrew James Mc Michael is a world leader who has contributed much to the field of immunology of HIV. His DNA AIDS vaccine, most definitely has enormous implications for human health world wide. He is a Professor of the Medical Research Council Human immunology unit in London. He has won many prizes. Until Professor McMichael's work, most effort to develop an HIV vaccine were going in the opposite direction by focusing on antibody responses. His work is not only HIV related but also related to other viruses like influenza virus. His work on influenza in humans and his fundamental work regarding MHC Class I restricted Cytolytic T cells puts him in a very elite class of scientists.

2. Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence
Therapy in Leukemia - Co-winner 1: Dr. Anne Dejean

Nationality: France
Age: 43 years
Research Director - Institute Pasteur, Paris, France.

Nominated work: The PML-RAR fusion mRNA generated by the t(15;17) translocation in acute promyelocytic leukemia encodes a functionally altered RAR

Dr. Anne Dejean and her group were the originators of the discovery of the relationship between rearrangements of the retinoic acid receptor genes and human cancers. She was the first to demonstrate that viral DNA can be integrated in unique sites into the human genome. Most recent work of Dr.Anne Dejean brings clues for the therapeutic effect of retinoic acid in this disease.

Nominated work: the cloning of the t(15.17) breakpoint characteristically associated with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL, or AML-M3)

Dr.Pier Paolo Pandolfi de Rinaldis has played a key role in the work that led to the cloning of the t(15.17) breakpoint characteristically associated with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL, or AML-M3). His contribution is substantial.

3. Hamdan Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services
Winner 1: Mr.Abdul Sattar Edhi

Nationality: Pakistan
Age: 72 years.
Place of birth: Bantwa, India.
Founder President of Edhi Foundation
Boulton Market, Mithadar, Karachi, Pakistan.

Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in Bantwa, in India on 28 February 1928. He started his charitable work in 1954 with the acquisition of his first ambulance from this humble beginning he has managed to create a wholly voluntary organistion dedicated to helping the poor and needy. His organization now has 300 emergency centers all over Pakistan, 600 ambulances (the biggest volunteer ambulance organization in the world) and 3 air ambulances. He runs the organisation with the help of his wife Bilquees. There are Edhi centres in 13 countries. Abdul Sattar Edhi is a philanthropist, humanitarian and a visionary. His story is of a lifetime of hard work dedicated to Pakistan's suffering millions.

3. Hamdan Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services
Winner 2: RED CRESCENT SOCIETY, United Arab Emirates

The UAE Red Crescent Society was established in 1983. The society is engaged in regulating and handling charitable and humanitarian work in the region and internationally.

This society has been working under the directives of H.H.Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of United Arab Emirates and has been presided by H.E.Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs since its establishment. This society spends 100s of million dollars for humanitarian work. The Red Crescent Society was among the first organizations that were established in the UAE to provide assistance and help to the needy especially to prisoners, orphans, poor families and students, refugees, people displaced by natural catastrophes among other cases.

The Society's scope of work extends to local and international activities with the foreign scope of work covering the three continents of Africa, Asia and Europe. The Red Crescent Society has been very active and has managed to gain recognition internationally and inside the UAE as a leading humanitarian and charitable institution.
