Introduction:

The purpose of this training event is to consider the pivotal role of radiological imaging in the appropriate management of illnesses which afflict children and children’s increased sensitivity to health risks associated with ionizing radiation and thus arriving at rational and optimized use of radiation in children. International organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agnecy (IAEA), World Health Organization (WHO), International Commssion on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) have published guidance and provided recommendation on protecting paediatric patients undrergoing examinations involving ionising radiations. Dedicated radiation safety program are helpful in dissemintaing the messgae to the desired audience. This course: Making Children Safer in Radiological Imaging is organzied to contribute in educating healthcare providers in the radiation safety of childern.

The overall objectives of the course are:

  • Deliberate on and review the implementation of radiation protection principles of Justification and Optimization in context of paediatric radiological imaging.
  • Discuss the status of radiation safety in paediatric imaging at the UAE and seek feedback from experts.
  • Present UAE paediatric radiation dose levels and compare them to international references.
  • Categorize and communicate radiation risk in paediatric imaging.
  • Discuss operational radiation safety in radiological imaging procedures.
  • Demonstrate radiation dose monitoring approaches.
  • Present radiation safety programs representing successful stories to protect paediatric patients.
  • Enhance Radiation Safety Culture among physicians, radiologists and support staff.
