H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is to distribute awards to the winners of Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences. 12 December 2010
Tomorrow evening, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and the Patron of Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS), will distribute the awards to the winners of 6th term of SHAMS (2009-2010) in a big ceremony at Rashid Hall in Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. 
 
500 VIPs will attend the ceremony, led by H.E. Dr. Hanif Hassan, UAE Minister of Health and Chairman of the Award's Board of Trustees. Attending the ceremony is open to the public to be a part of this important global event.
 
The ceremony is held in the framework of 6th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences, which is being held in Dubai by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (12 -16 December 2010), under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance. 
 
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences holds Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences every two years in conjunction with the Ceremony of the Award. 
 
This year, Diabetes is the theme of the conference and Grand Hamdan International Award, while obesity, osteoporosis and thyroid are the topics of Hamdan International Award for Medical Research Excellence. 
 
This year, 6th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences includes many important events such as: MENA Diabetes Leadership Forum, which was opened today at InterContinental Hotel, in Dubai Festival City, Ceremony of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, and Emirates Endocrinology Congress 2010 (14 -16 December).
 
The Patron of the Award H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, will distribute the awards to the winners, as a message for all workers in the medical field inside and outside UAE encouraging them on developing the field of Medical Scientific Research. 
 
Today, 20 winners will receive their awards in 3 categories i.e. the international, the Arab world and the UAE awards. 
 
Concerning the International Awards, Prof. Paul Zimmet - Australia, and Prof. Jacco Tumilto - Finland, are the winners of Grand Hamdan International Award. 
Concerning Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence, the winners are Prof. John A. Canes, UK, Dr. Jeffrey M. Friedman, USA, and Prof. B. Reed Larsen, USA. 
 
The third award in that category is Hamdan Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services, whose winners are Zayed Giving Initiative, UAE, Dr. Prakash and Dr. (Mrs.) Mandakini Amte, India, Cure International and Dr. Ashok Gupta, India. 
 
Concerning the Arab world category, the winners of Hamdan Award for the Best Medical College/ Institute or Center in the Arab world are Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University - Egypt, and Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center - Lebanon. 
 
The first winner of Hamdan Award for honoring distinguished personalities from the Arab world is Dr. Hussein Al Gezairy, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean World Health Organization and a former Health Minister in Saudi Arabia, and the founder of Faculty of Medicine, University of Riyadh in 1969.
The second winner is Dr. Kamel Ajlouni, a former Minister of Health of Jordan and a former President of the University of Jordan Science and Technology (1986-1995). 
 
Concerning the category of the United Arab Emirates awards, Hamdan Award for Outstanding Clinical Department in the Public Sector in UAE is to Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tawam Hospital, Al Ain-UAE. 
 
As for Hamdan Award for Original Research Papers Published in the Journal of Medical Sciences or in Emirates Medical Journal, it has been won by 2 research papers. 
The first research paper is entitled "genetic polymorphisms, protein expression and complications to radiotherapy in Saudi Cancer patients" by King Faisal Specialist Hospital's research center, Riyadh, KSA. 
 
The second research is entitled "the NF-KB Inhibitor IKB, negates colon cell migration, invasion, proliferation and tumor growth" by a group of researchers from Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Therapy, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, in collaboration with a group of researchers from France. 
 
During the ceremony, the four winners of the award of honoring individuals working in the field of medicine and health in UAE will be announced.
 
It is worth mentioning that this award is for those who have dedicated their lives to the medical field, and who have contributed to develop medical services in UAE.
 
This award's winners are not selected out through direct nominations, but through communications among the award's Board of Trustees, UAE Ministry of Health and health authorities in each emirate.
