SHAMS Dedicates Emirates Volunteer Award To Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. 03 February 2011
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS) has dedicated Emirates Volunteer Award to the Patron of the Award H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the UAE Minister of Finance. 
 
Mr. Abdullah Bin Souqat, Executive Director of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, received the award last Monday during the opening ceremony of 3rd Emirates and Gulf Volunteer Conference at Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi.
 
 
 
Bin Souqat thanked Zayed Initiative, General Women's Union and all the Conference’s organizers.
 
The conference was held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, and supported by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the President's representative in the Western region, and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority. 
 
Abdullah Bin Souqat praised the role which is played by H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak in supporting the voluntary movement in the UAE, whose foundations were laid by H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul.
 
He added that UAE has become an international model of supporting voluntary work in various fields of health, education, environment, culture and humanitarian activities locally, regionally and globally. 
He added that receiving Emirates Volunteer award is a great incentive for all staff working at Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS). 
 
Bin Souqat said that H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, the UAE Minister of Finance and the patron of the award is considered one of the greatest leaders of the UAE voluntary work who spare no efforts to achieve prosperity for countries all over the world. 
 
Along with his efforts to alleviate poverty and help victims of wars and natural disasters all over the world, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has an effective role in improving the standards of education and health services which is delivered within many countries all over the world, through establishing many non-profit Organizations like Al Maktoum Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan Award for distinguished Academic Performance and Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences. 
 
He said that in 1999 Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS) was established.
 
At its beginning SHAMS was included only the awards’ Centre, whose responsibility includes honoring scientists and researchers who have contributed to enrich the global medical field. 
 
Over time, the patron of the award, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has decided to expand the award’s responsibilities. 
 
Thus, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has given his instructions concerning adding new categories and centers to be affiliated to the award. 
 
"Centre for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS) is considered one of the most important centers of the award" he said.
 
Sheikh hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum established the Center in 2003 with the mission of building the largest Genetic Disorders database in the Arab world. 
 
While talking about SHAMS’s centers, Bin Souqat referred to the center for continuing medical education which focuses on supporting important medical conferences in UAE in order to upgrade the doctors’ skills in various medical specializations. 
 
The third center of the award is center for supporting research, through which the award has supported 60 important medical researches within the UAE.
 
In each term of the award, two million Dhs are allocated for supporting medical research.
 
The fifth Center of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences is center for publishing which is responsible for issuing numbers of publications including Journal of Medical Sciences (JMS), which is the only medical electronic journal within UAE.
