Hamdan Medical Journal documents the achievements of the pioneers of medical sciences 15 June 2015
The Hamdan Medical Journal, a periodical issued by the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, has launched a new section about the history of the scientists previously honored by the award during its history which extends over 16 years and 8 terms.

This was stated by Mr. Abdullah Bin Souqat, the Executive Director of the Hamdan Medical Award. He spoke about this new section as an addition to the pure scientific content of the journal to document the achievements of the deceased scientists and researchers, previously honored by the award, in recognition of their efforts in enriching the medical field and improving the quality of human life and health care all over the world. “This section aims to enhance the knowledge of the present and future generations about leading figures in the medical field”, he said.

“The new section culminates the award’s continuous efforts in communicating with the winners in order to support the scientific and research cooperation in the medical field”, Abdulla Bin Souqat said.

“Through the Volume 8 Issue 2 of the Hamdan Medical Journal, available on the web site of the journal with a focus on pancreatic cancer, an inclusive analysis article about the achievements of the late Professor John Fort, USA, has been published. Prof. Fort is the winner of the Hamdan International award for Medical Research Excellence in the 3rd term of the award 2003-2004, whose topic was the Prevention & Non-invasive Therapy of Gastrointestinal Disorders”, Mr. Abdullah bin Souqat said.

“The article reviews the scientific background of Late Prof. Fort as a true pioneer in epithelial cell physiology and cell biology whose studies have contributed to change the understanding of the function of the stomach, during the nineties of the last century, and led to vital and novel development of drugs that have benefited innumerable patients. These drugs formed the basis for the development of a new class of highly selective drugs to reduce acid secretion from the stomach”, he added.

It is worthy to mention that the Hamdan Medical Journal is an Emirati medical periodical dating back to 1999, when it was printed under the name of the "Journal of Medical Sciences. In line with the global revolution in communication, the new web site of the journal, which was renamed as the Hamdan Medical Journal, has been inaugurated in March 2012.

Since then and through this open-access web site, no restriction on accessing the articles and no subscription are required, in order to ensure the access of a broader spectrum of scientists and researchers worldwide.
