Personal Details/Academic Background
 
Born in 1960, Prof. Mona Alrukhaimi completed her schooling in UAE. A brilliant student, she received a Ministry of Education Award for 2nd rank in UAE in the High School 1976. Joined Medical Faculty at Kuwait University where she got her bachelor degree in Science in 1980 and then, among the first batch, her bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1983 .
 
Obtained her M.R.C.P. (UK) diploma in 1989, while working as Medical Officer at Rashid Hospital in Dubai. Dr. Mona, then received her FRCP Edinburgh 2001 and FRCP London 2005.During her career she was promoted to registrar, senior registrar and then Consultant Physician and Nephrologist and was appointed as Head of Medical Department and Renal unit in Dubai Hospital.
 
She spent the Academic Year 2001-2002 at the Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation Department of Hospital European Georges Pompidou (HEGP), where she attended the transplantation clinic, ward round and concentrated on studying the renal biopsies with the pathologist. She also joined the faculty of Dubai Medical College as lecturer and then as Professor of Medicine. In addition she obtained her professional Diploma in Management of Health Services and Social Care from American University in Cairo 2005.
 
Professional Milestones
 
Dr. Mona Alrukhaimi is the first female Nephrologist and Internist in UAE. She is currently a Professor of Medicine at Dubai Medical College, UAE, Consultant Physician and Nephrologist and Director of Alrukhaimi Polyclinic. She is the current President of the Emirates Medical Association Nephrology Society, ISN Council (20112016), Co-chair of ISN-GO Middle East Committee, and the leader of the KDIGO Implementation Task Force for the Middle East and African Regions. She is a Member of the Governing  Board of the Arab Society of Nephrology and Renal ransplantation. She is also a permanent member of Middle East Society of Transplantation and active member in Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group. During her work in Dubai Hospital she Chaired the Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee and Patient & Family Right Committee, as well as was a member of several other committees.
 
Dr. Mona has several publications in peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Urology, Transplantation Proceedings, Saudi Journal of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation, Nephrology, and Journal of Maternal- Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. She also participated as a speaker in many local and international meetings.
 
Major Achievements
 
Dr. Alrukhaimi has actively organized World Kidney Day activities in the UAE since 2006 and the past five rounds of the ISN Update Course in Nephrology. She was elected four times as President of the Society. She played an active role in the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism and continues to be an active member of its custodian group. The draft of the declaration was discussed first in Dubai in December 2007 . She is a member of the Steering Committee for Women in Transplantation under The Transplant Society. Dr. Mona is working extensively on initiating the program of prevention & detection of chronic kidney disease in liaison with Primary Health Care Physicians in the UAE. She is also working as a volunteer in the UAE Red Crescent.
 
Dr Alrukhaimi has received various prestigious awards, including the Ministry of Education Award, UAE (1976),Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Postgraduate achievement (1989) and the National Kidney Foundation International Distinguished Medalist, USA (2007).
